How to price your freelance photography services

Are you struggling with whether it’s best to share your prices on your website or not?

Here’s my take on why keeping them off might just be the smarter move to secure more work!

Should you have your prices on your website?

Here’s my hot take: the answer for me is no, and for a good reason.

Our pricing is based on the client's scope of work and what it will cost to execute their visions!

If I had what my highest project COULD cost outlined on my website, I could be saying goodbye to potential opportunities before even getting the chance to speak to said client.

With that being said, there’s no doubt not everyone will have the budget to work with us so I do believe it’s beneficial to state “pricing starts from x”. There’s nothing worse than devoting time to a lead, going back and forth via email, jumping on a call, preparing the proposal to either, jumping on a call, preparing the proposal to either then be ghosted or be told it’s wayyyy out of their budget (and yes, we ask that question but it’s a tough one to squeeze an answer out of).

Full price transparency would be ideal, but our services are complex and vary widely—there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, though it would save me a ton of time!

So, is there a time and place?

Don’t get me wrong, I still believe there IS a time and place to add your prices on your website. For example, if you prefer to have packages for your services! And I say why not when it get’s the deal done much faster!

Is your pricing too low?

This leads us to another important consideration: are you charging enough? If you’re even asking yourself this, it’s probably time to sit down and rethink your pricing strategy. Make sure you’re being compensated for every aspect of your work, including travel, post-production, prop budget, and more. Don’t absorb these costs—make the client pay for them!

So what do you do? Are you a price on the website person or not? Do you think it’s time you rethink your pricing strategy?
